Volkswagen: OK to Skip YouTube Ad After 5 Seconds - Business ...

Volkswagen doesn't care if you skip over its YouTube pre-roll ad for the new Fusca (the Brazilian form of the Beetle) after five seconds.

In fact, VW designed the ad in a way that it will automatically skip itself for you so you can get to whatever cat video you were planning on watching. Volkswagen explains that the skipping action is the "most boring thing of the internet."

This is all a part of its way of promoting a new function called "DSG Tiptonic Transmission," which shifts gears automatically.

Agency AlmapBBDO has made really cool digital ads in the past. Most notably, an ad for car insurance provider Bradesco that appeared in iPad magazines. It looked like a traditional car ad, but when users started to swipe to turn the page, the car crashed into the side of the tablet. The tagline read: "Unexpected events happen without warning. Make a Bradesco car insurance plan."

Volkswagen is also on a roll with ways to spice out dull internet practices, including SEO strategies.

Tim Langdell's 'Edge' trademark revoked - Develop

Legal saga comes to an end two years after Mobigames and EA cases

The US Patent and Trademarks department has finally removed the 'Edge' from Tim Langdell's trademark bullying scheme.

Two and a half years after a U.S. District Court Judge ruled they were no longer valid, Commissioner for Trademarks Deborah S. Cohn signed a legal notice canceling the trademarks on the phrases ?The Edge?, ?Edge, ?Cutting Edge?, and ?Gamer's Edge?.

Langdell is known for using these trademarks to file suits against any video game related company that used any of these phrases, including Mobigame, Namco, Sony, Future Publishing, and Marvel Entertainment.

His attempt to sue EA over the title of the first-person free-runner Mirror's Edge proved disastrous for Langdell when the judge found his evidence to be fraudulent and declared his trademarks invalid.

Cutting back on sleep harms blood vessel function and breathing control

Apr. 22, 2013 ? With work and entertainment operating around the clock in our modern society, sleep is often a casualty. A bevy of research has shown a link between sleep deprivation and cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, and obesity. However, it's been unclear why sleep loss might lead to these effects. Several studies have tested the effects of total sleep deprivation, but this model isn't a good fit for the way most people lose sleep, with a few hours here and there. In a new study by Keith Pugh, Shahrad Taheri, and George Balanos, all of the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, researchers test the effects of partial sleep deprivation on blood vessels and breathing control. They find that reducing sleep length over two consecutive nights leads to less healthy vascular function and impaired breathing control.

The team will discuss the abstract of their study entitled, "The Effects of Sleep Restriction on the Respiratory and Vascular Control," at the Experimental Biology 2013 meeting, being held April 20-24, 2013 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Boston, Mass. The poster presentation is sponsored by the American Physiological Society (APS), a co-sponsor of the event. As the findings are being presented at a scientific conference, they should be considered preliminary, as they have not undergone the peer review process that is conducted prior to the data being published in a scientific journal.

Cutting Sleep in Half The researchers have worked with eight healthy adult volunteers between the ages of 20 to 35 to date. For the first two nights of the study, the researchers had these volunteers sleep a normal night of eight hours. Then, rather than restrict their sleep completely, the researchers instead had them sleep only four hours during each of three consecutive nights.

Each of these volunteers underwent tests to see how well their blood vessels accommodate an increase in blood flow, a test of healthy blood vessel, or vascular, function. Following the first two nights of restricted sleep, the researchers found a significant reduction in vascular function compared to following the nights of normal sleep. However, after the third night of sleep restriction, vascular function returned to baseline, possibly an adaptive response to acute sleep loss, study leader Pugh explains.

In other tests, the researchers exposed subjects to moderately high levels of carbon dioxide, which normally increases the depth and rate of breathing. However, breathing control was substantially reduced after the volunteers lost sleep.

The researchers later had these volunteers sleep 10 hours a night for five nights. After completing the same tests, results showed that vascular function and breathing control had improved.

A Mechanism for Cardiovascular Harm Pugh notes that the results could suggest a mechanism behind the connection between sleep loss and cardiovascular disease. "If acute sleep loss occurs repetitively over a long period of time, then vascular health could be compromised further and eventually mediate the development of cardiovascular disease," he explains.

Similarly, the loss of breathing control that the researchers observed could play a role in the development of sleep apnea, which has also been linked with cardiovascular disease. Pugh adds that some populations who tend to report sleeping shorter periods, such as the elderly, could be at an even higher risk of these adverse health effects.

He and his colleagues plan to continue studying these effects in more subjects to strengthen their results. Eventually, Pugh says, they hope to discover a mechanism to explain why restricting sleep harms vascular function and breathing control.

Boston Marathon bombing: the blame game begins

Just days after the Boston Marathon bombing, the political maneuvering and blaming have begun. Some lawmakers fault the FBI for not following up on intelligence about one of the alleged bombers. Others want to prosecute the surviving suspect as an enemy combatant.

It may be plainly obvious who was responsible for the horrific Boston Marathon bombing on Patriots? Day: ethnically Chechen brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev,?one dead in a shoot-out with police, the other seriously wounded and sedated in a Boston hospital where investigators are eager to interrogate him.

Unexploded bombs were found in their apartment, surveillance videos show them carrying heavy backpacks in the vicinity of and just before the explosions that killed three people and injured more than 180, and they are said to have acknowledged their responsibility to the driver of a car they hijacked.

But less than a week after a train of events that kept Boston-area towns on lock-down for days, the political maneuvering and blaming have already begun.

Russian officials warned the US about the older Tsarnaev brother ? Tamerlan ? in 2011. When Tamerlan returned from a six-month stay in Russia the next year, US officials questioned him and his family about any ties with radical Islam but determined that he was not a threat.

?The ball was dropped in one of two ways,? US Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) of South Carolina said on CNN?s ?State of the Union? Sunday. ?The FBI missed a lot of things, is one potential answer, or our laws do not allow the FBI to follow up in a sound solid way.?

?It?s people like this that you don?t want to let out of your sight, and this was a mistake,? Sen. Graham said. ?Either our laws are insufficient or the FBI failed, but we?re at war with radical Islamists and we need to up our game.?

US Rep. Peter King (R) of New York is critical of the FBI as well.

"This is at least the fifth case I'm aware of where the FBI has failed to stop someone," Rep. King said on "Fox News Sunday," citing the examples of Anwar al-Awlaki, Nidal Malik Hasan, Carlos Bledsoe, and David Coleman Headley.

"This is the latest in a series of cases like this ? where the FBI is given information about someone being a potential terrorist," he said. "They look at them, and then they don't take action, and then [those individuals] go out and commit murders."

Speaking on NBC?s ?Meet the Press,??US Rep. Mike Rogers (R) of Michigan says the fault in this case rests with Russian intelligence services who failed to fully cooperate with the FBI.

Boston Restaurant Industry Loses One Of Its Own In ... - The Braiser

Tragically, Boston?s restaurant community suffered heavy losses from Monday?s terrorist attack on the Boston Marathon. CNN reported yesterday that not only was a restaurant on Boylston Street the ?epicenter? of the attack, but also that a restaurant worker had been one of the three killed.

Krystie Campbell, 29, was a former general manager at the recently-closed Summer Shack in Hingham, MA, and was working at the time at Jimmy?s Steer House in Arlington Heights. She had been attending the race with a friend, who is currently hospitalized with severe injuries.

?No words can describe how much she meant to all of us,? Summer Shack said in a Facebook post. ?She was an incredible woman, always full of energy and hard at work, but never too tired to share her love and a smile with everyone. She was an inspiration to all of us.?

And while many restaurants along Boylston Street were severely damaged by the explosions (Eater has a running list), one restaurant in particular stands out: the second bomb exploded on the patio of Forum, injuring guests and waitstaff as well as runners, and severely damaging the restaurant.

In a message to its patrons, Forum announced that the restaurant would be closed indefinitely, ?as we are now a crime scene.? But despite their adversity, they confirmed that, indeed, Boston is tough as nails:

We?d like to thank the Boston Police, Fire Department and EMS workers who helped us piece together our collective confusion and tend to those injured. We?d also like to thank the members of our own staff and guests who went above and beyond, helping those injured?.

Thank you all for the patronage during this first year of business. Boston Nightlife Ventures is proud to operate restaurants and bars in this beautiful city. We will prevail.

We love you Boston.
