Podcast 15: Building a Niche eCommerce Business with Nathan Hartnett

I am always thrilled when I find people outside of the ?internet marketing? niche that are finding big success with the principles that I teach on my blog all the time.

I am constantly trying to harp on the fact that finding ?long tail? keywords is something that EVERY business should be doing, not just affiliate marketers.? I?ve shared the success of Marcus Sheridan with this for his pool company.? Jon Haws built a successful landscaping company using long tail keywords.? Last week, I shared the story of Perry Rosenbloom that found success with his Glacier National Park travel guide site using smart keyword research and great content.

And now today, I?m happy to share with you the story of Nathan Hartnett.

I had the privilege of interviewing Nathan Hartnett recently about his niche eCommerce sites.? And you guessed it: he attributes much of his success to solid keyword research (understanding markets), and exposing low competition.

The Story

Nathan was an air traffic controller for the Australian Air Force for many years.? He had a great job, and as you?ll hear, was offered $160,000 a year to take new position.? With a great career path ahead of him, why would he decide to make a change?

Well, 2 words: Love and Lifestyle

Nathan, met a girl and also started thinking about the lifestyle he wanted to live.? He wanted a career that allowed him to live where he wanted and to let his business work for him (not the other way around).

As a result he decided to research and sell a product on eBay.? He found that jewelry was a good option, because it was both profitable and easy to ship.? So, he started his business even without an internet connection!? He used an internet cafe when he had time to get the business up and running.

Eventually he created VurgeJewellery.com, which is still his primary website.? However, he learned a lot along the way.? He discovered niche sites, and how they could actually help his business.

He also began to fully understand the importance of keyword research.? As a result he has been able to build 9 different niche eCommerce businesses.? He attributes his success to proper keyword research and truly analyzing whether there is a market for the product.? Its a very similar process to building niche sites!

He has since lived all over the world with his wife, and is enjoying the lifestyle he wants.

Here is what is covered on the podcast:

Nathan continues to build his online retail business; however, he also blogs about business lessons he has learned at TalknBusiness.com.? So be sure to stop by and say hi to Nathan!

How Long Tail Pro Can Help You Capture Way More Search Engine Traffic

If your business could benefit in any way from getting more search engine traffic, I have some good news.

Search engines are in love with long tail keywords! If you are able to provide relevant content targeting these long tail keywords, then you can see a dramatic increase to the amount of traffic Google and other search engines send you.

Long Tail Pro is a powerful keyword research tool that makes finding these valuable long tail keywords a breeze.

What are ?long tail keywords?? Essentially, these are words or phrases that people type into the search engines to find very specific things. Rather than searching for ?dog training? a user might search for ?how to potty train a pitbull?.

This is an example of a Long Tail Keyword. To visualize how Long Tail Keywords work...

Previous studies on toxic effects of BPA couldn't be reproduced

Jan. 2, 2013 ? Following a three-year study using more than 2,800 mice, a University of Missouri researcher was not able to replicate a series of previous studies by another research group investigating the controversial chemical BPA. The MU study is not claiming that BPA is safe, but that the previous series of studies are not reproducible. The MU study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, also investigated an estrogenic compound found in plants, genistein, in the same three-year study.

"Our findings don't say anything about the positive or negative effects of BPA or genistein," said Cheryl Rosenfeld, associate professor of biomedical sciences in MU's Bond Life Science Center. "Rather, our series of experiments did not detect the same findings as reported by another group on the potential developmental effects of BPA and genistein when exposure of young occurs in the womb."

Creating reliable data on the effects of the chemicals on mice is important to human health since people are frequently exposed to BPA and genistein and humans share similar biological functions with mice. BPA is a chemical used in certain plastic bottles and may be found in the lining of some canned goods and receipt paper. Genistein occurs naturally in soy beans and is sold as a dietary supplement. Research by Fredrick VomSaal, professor of biological science at MU, and others suggests the chemicals may have other adverse effects on many animals, including humans.

Researcher who conducted the original series of experiments claimed that exposure to BPA and genestein resulted in yellow coat color, or agouti, offspring that were more susceptible to obesity and type 2 diabetes compared to their brown coat color, healthy siblings. However, Rosenfeld and her team did not obtain the same results when repeating the study over a three-year period.

After failing to repeat the original experiments findings with similar numbers of animals, Rosenfeld's group extended the studies to include animal numbers that surpassed the prior studies to verify that their findings were not a fluke and to provide sufficient number of animals to ensure that significant differences would be detected if they existed. However, even these additional numbers of animals and extended experiments failed to reproduce the earlier findings. However, the current studies demonstrate that a maternal diet enriched in estrogenic compounds leads to a greater number of offspring that express an agouti gene compared to those that do not, even though equal ratios should have been born.

"This finding suggests that certain uterine environments may favor animals with a 'thrifty genotype' meaning that the agouti gene of mice may help them survive in unfavorable uterine environments over those mice devoid of this gene, Yet, the downside of this expression of the agouti during early development is that the animals may be at risk for later metabolic disorders, such as obesity and diabetes" Rosenfeld said. "In this aspect, humans also have an agouti gene that encodes for the agouti signaling protein (ASIP) that is expressed in fat tissue and pancreas, and there is some correlation that obese individuals exhibit greater expression of this gene compared to leaner individuals. Therefore, the agouti gene may have evolved to permit humans the ability to survive famine, but its enhanced expression may also potentiate metabolic diseases under bountiful food conditions."

While the research casts doubt on the previous study, Rosenfeld said that by understanding the genetic profile of the mice in the first series of studies, scientists could learn more about the correlation between certain genes and obesity. This could eventually influence prevention and treatment programs for patients with diabetes and other obesity-related diseases in humans.

Oil Drilling Rig Runs Aground In Gulf Of Alaska

Waves crash over the Kulluk oil rig, which washed aground on Sitkalidak Island, Alaska. Officials say aircraft have not spotted any signs of a fuel leak from the rig, which reportedly does not contain crude oil.

Waves crash over the Kulluk oil rig, which washed aground on Sitkalidak Island, Alaska. Officials say aircraft have not spotted any signs of a fuel leak from the rig, which reportedly does not contain crude oil.

PA3 Jon Klingenberg/Coast Guard

An oil drilling rig holding more than 150,000 gallons of diesel, lubricating oil, and hydraulic fluid has run aground near Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska, after it was being towed during a storm. The crew was evacuated before the rig was incapacitated.

"The rig ran aground in a storm, with waves up to 35 feet and wind to 70 miles per hour," reports Jeff Brady, on NPR's Newscast. The Shell Oil rig is "about 250 miles south of Anchorage," Jeff says.

Update at 6:13 p.m. ET. No Sign of a Leak.

NPR's Howard Berkes reports that at a news briefing that began at 6 p.m. ET, officials said flyovers by two helicopters spotted no breach in the Kulluk's hull, and no sign of a leak. The rig seemed stable, they said.

Update at 5:53 p.m. ET. Details on the Kulluk.

The Kulluk had finished its part in Shell's oil exploration program and "was en route to winter harbor," Kelly op de Weegh, who handles media relations for Shell Oil, tells our colleague Howard Berkes, who reports on the grounding for today's All Things Considered.

That means there's no crude oil aboard. There is no certainty yet over whether the vessel could still pose a threat to wildlife in the gulf. Aircraft that flew over the craft yesterday reported no sign of a sheen that would betray an oil or fuel leak.

Sill, Lois Epstein, who heads the Wilderness Society's Arctic program, tells Howard, "the reality is that nature always wins in Alaska and this incident clearly demonstrates that."

Update at 11:43 a.m. ET. New data on rig's contents, and the tow.

While early reports put the total amount of combined fluids aboard the rig at around 160,000 gallons, the group overseeing the Kulluk grounding said this morning that the number is 151,000 gallons ? 139,000 gallons of ultra low sulfur diesel, along with 12,000 gallons of lubricating oil and hydraulic fluid used in the rig's drilling equipment.

The agency also confirms that while the rig broke away from its tow lines last week, the tug that was towing the rig through dangerous seas Monday disconnected the line for the safety of the towing vessel's crew.

"The Coast Guard said the Kulluk grounded around 9 p.m. Monday on the southeast side of Sitkalidak Island in Ocean Bay," reports Alaska's KTUU Channel 2. Sitkalidak is a small island that lies just south of Kodiak Island.

It will likely be several hours before the Coast Guard can estimate the extent of the damage ? the agency will send aircraft to survey the area at first light Tuesday.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC's Kulluk rig is built especially for the Alaskan gulf, as Darci Sinclair of Shell tells Jeff.

"It's a round ship and the diesel fuel tanks are located at the center, encased in very heavy steel," Sinclair says. "But it's really too soon to know if there was any damage to the ship."

The rig has been in trouble since Thursday, when the ship towing it suffered an engine failure; in a separate incident, a tow line snapped, as Alaska Public Radio reports. One day later, a "unified command" group was assembled, made up of members of the Coast Guard and representatives of the state, tribal, and federal governments.

The rig's 18 crew members were taken off the vessel Saturday; the situation deteriorated on New Year's Eve, as a powerful storm moved into the area.
