Rogers brings 4G LTE Samsung Galaxy Note to Canada

Rogers Galaxy Note

We got our first look at AT&T's LTE-powered Samsung Galaxy Note back at CES, and now it looks like a very similar-looking device will be making its way to Canada on Rogers. A blog post on Rogers' official RedBoard site reveals that the network will offer the four-button, 4G LTE version of the Note from February.

For the uninitiated, the Galaxy Note is Samsung's gigantic 5.3-inch phone/hybrid tablet, which carries a massive 1280x800 HD SuperAMOLED display, and offers stylus input through Samsung's WACOM-powered "S Pen". Like the AT&T version, Rogers' Galaxy Note apparently totes a "1.5 GHz dual-core processor" of some description. Though unconfirmed, rumors suggest this is a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip rather than the Samsung Exynos found on the international Note.

For more on the Galaxy Note, check out our review of the international version, or our hands-on coverage of the AT&T version.

That which does not kill yeast makes it stronger

ScienceDaily (Jan. 29, 2012) ? Cells trying to keep pace with constantly changing environmental conditions need to strike a fine balance between maintaining their genomic integrity and allowing enough genetic flexibility to adapt to inhospitable conditions. In their latest study, researchers at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research were able to show that under stressful conditions yeast genomes become unstable, readily acquiring or losing whole chromosomes to enable rapid adaption.

The research, published in the January 29, 2012, advance online issue of Nature, demonstrates that stress itself can increase the pace of evolution by increasing the rate of chromosomal instability or aneuploidy. The observation of stress-induced chromosome instability casts the molecular mechanisms driving cellular evolution into a new perspective and may help explain how cancer cells elude the body's natural defense mechanisms or the toxic effects of chemotherapy drugs.

"Cells employ intricate control mechanisms to maintain genomic stability and prevent abnormal chromosome numbers," says the study's leader, Stowers investigator Rong Li, Ph.D. "We found that under stress cellular mechanisms ensuring chromosome transmission fidelity are relaxed to allow the emergence of progeny cells with diverse aneuploid chromosome numbers, producing a population with large genetic variation."

Known as adaptive genetic change, the concept of stress-induced genetic variation first emerged in bacteria and departs from a long-held basic tenet of evolutionary theory, which holds that genetic diversity -- evolution's raw material from which natural selection picks the best choice under any given circumstance -- arises independently of hostile environmental conditions.

"From an evolutionary standpoint it is a very interesting finding," says graduate student and first author Guangbo Chen. "It shows how stress itself can help cells adapt to stress by inducing chromosomal instability."

Aneuploidy is most often associated with cancer and developmental defects and has recently been shown to reduce cellular fitness. Yet, an abnormal number of chromosomes is not necessarily a bad thing. Many wild yeast strains and their commercial cousins used to make bread or brew beer have adapted to their living environs by rejiggering the number of chromosomes they carry. "Euploid cells are optimized to thrive under 'normal' conditions," says Li. "In stressful environments aneuploid cells can quickly gain the upper hand when it comes to finding creative solutions to roadblocks they encounter in their environment."

After Li and her team had shown in an earlier Nature study that aneuploidy can confer a growth advantage on cells when they are exposed to many different types of stress conditions, the Stowers researchers wondered whether stress itself could increase the chromosome segregation error rate.

To find out, Chen exposed yeast cells to different chemicals that induce various types of general stress and assessed the loss of an artificial chromosome. This initial screen revealed that many stress conditions, including oxidative stress, increased the rate of chromosome loss ten to 20-fold, a rate typically observed when cells are treated with benomyl, a microtubule inhibitor that directly affects chromosome segregation.

The real surprise was radicicol, a drug that induces proteotoxic stress by inhibiting a chaperone protein, recalls Chen. "Even at a concentration that barely slows down growth, radicicol induced extremely high levels of chromosome instability within a very short period of time," he says.

Continued growth of yeast cells in the presence of radicicol led to the emergence of drug-resistant colonies that had acquired an additional copy of chromosome XV. Yeast cells pretreated briefly with radicicol to induce genomic instability also adapted more efficiently to the presence of other drugs including fluconazole, tunicamycin, or benomyl, when compared to euploid cells.

Interestingly, certain chromosome combinations dominated in colonies that were resistant to a specific drug. Fluconazole-resistant colonies typically gained an extra copy of chromosome VIII, tunicamycin-resistant colonies tended to lose chromosome XVI, while a majority of benomyl-resistant colonies got rid of chromosome XII. "This suggested to us that specific karyotypes are associated with resistance to certain drugs," says Chen.

Digging deeper, Chen grew tunicamycin-resistant yeast cells, which had adapted to the presence of the antibiotic by losing one copy of chromosome XVI, under drug-free conditions. Before long, colonies of two distinct sizes emerged. He quickly discovered that the faster growing colonies had regained the missing chromosome. By returning to a normal chromosome XVI number, these newly arisen euploid cells had acquired a distinctive growth advantage over their aneuploid neighbors. But most importantly, the fast growing yeast cells were no longer resistant to tunicamycin and thus clearly linking tunicamycin resistance to the loss of chromosome XVI.

Researchers who also contributed to the work include William D. Bradford and Chris W. Seidel both at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research.

The study was funded in part by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.

Kelli Gail: Thank You James Dolan and Time Warner

I'd like to thank James Dolan, his evil empire and Time Warner Cable. As a New Yorker for fifteen years, this was the year I was going to become a full time Knicks fan. I was fully prepared to commit myself to watching as many games as I could. The team was poised to build upon their first-round playoff exit last season. I couldn't wait to watch the Speedball offense, the Broadway Bigs (Melo, Chandler, Amare) and B-Diddy (the combo of Baron Davis/Mike Bibby at the point) gel as a team and bring back fireworks to Madison Square Garden. I downloaded and studied the new schedule, ready to immerse myself in all things Knickerbockers. I was all in.

Then WW3 broke out between the MSG Network and Time Warner Cable over a fee dispute of a proposed whopping 53 percent fare hike for MSG subscribers. Unfortunately my building is not wired for Verizon FIOS so, along with 2.8 million other people, I now live in a perpetual Rangers and Knicks blackout. To paraphrase the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld: No Knicks for You!

Forced to get my b-ball fix from another source, I discovered that the NBA TV Network had taken the place of MSG Network on Channel 27. Thinking I would just watch for a few minutes then continue channel surfing, I was surprised when a close Cavs/Heat game pulled me in. Another night, it was a battle for LA with a Clippers vs. Lakers game. Next a magically exciting Memphis/Clips game appeared. I was hooked.

Previously a helicopter NBA playoff fan I rarely watched many games in the regular season. I usually only swooned over the superstars that littered the TV during the playoffs -- Paul Pierce, Pau Gasol, Kobe, Dirk, Dwight Howard, LeBron, D-Wade. These were the players I knew of, had seen play and rooted for.

Given the Knicks 7-13 record, James Dolan and company are actually doing me a favor. I didn't have to watch the one point Melo game or the dismal shooting performances of Iman Shumpert or Toney Douglas. I've been spared wincing through the club's attempt at playing big league defense.

Now that I have succumbed to my sports fanaticism and started watching regular season games, I have discovered many new players from the flyover states. Who knew the Grizzlies had a player on the team from Iran? Or that Kevin Love (who??) was deserving of a $60 million contract extension with Minnesota?

It's a whole new brave world out there outside of the big city. Here are five observations and questions:

1. The Memphis Grizzlies new uniforms are yellow on top and green on the bottom. Is that allowed in the Haus of David Stern? Was he too busy blocking the CP3 trade to the Lakers when someone green-lighted the unis?

2. How magnificent is the new look Clippers? I want to Occupy Lob City

3. The NBA discovered the Internet!??! Pop-up tweets pepper the screen in the down times during a game from people like Ernie Johnson in the studio or Doc Rivers' son who begged his dad to put him into the lineup when the team was losing. Does this mean the players will now be allowed to tweet during half-time or time-outs?

4. TNT has a new American Idol-Style stage where Kenny the Jet can excitedly bounce around in front of and review plays of game tape. I have a request: Can he sing 'Benny and the Jets', or 'Everyone Wang Chung Tonight' up there? I'm good with either.

5. One thing that hasn't changed: Craig Sager still has the market cornered on the ugliest blazers in the history of television

I owe a debt of gratitude to all the greedy people who wanted to exponentially up the carriage
charges for us poor suckers to watch the hometown team. If they had come to an agreement to
force me to pay more for a bad product, I would not have discovered there is life outside of the Big Apple when it comes to sports. Shhh, just don't tell Giants fans that.

Once Upon a Time: Who's the Evil Queen's Former Love? (omg!)

Giancarlo Esposito, Lana Parrilla | Photo Credits: Jack Rowland/ABC

Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who's the Evil Queen's true love after all?

Once Upon a Time's soulless, heart-crushing Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) once had a love of her own ? and it wasn't King Leopold (Richard Schiff), Snow White's father who will be introduced on this week's episode of the ABC drama. To find out who that love could be, TVGuide.com turned to the Queen's right-hand man Sidney (Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito), who also dishes on which fairy tale character the Mirror was before he was in the employ of the Queen.

Once Upon a Time's Lana Parrilla: Why the Evil Queen became so evil

Based on the promos for this week's episode, Sidney will be trying to help Emma (Jennifer Morrison) take down Regina.
Esposito:
One of the wild cards in the story is Sidney. We don't quite know where he stands. Is he a good guy? Is he a bad guy? In this particular episode, you see he takes a stand against the mayor, which is very interesting because she's put him in his job. There is that mystical back story that we have in the fairy tale land that, oftentimes, relates to what we do in the Storybrooke world. This is an interesting episode because it leads to us finding out more about who Sidney really is in both worlds.

If he's turning to Emma, Regina must've really hurt him.
Esposito:
As you know, she is totally in control of everything in the Storybrooke world, or at least wants to be. She has really hurt his sensibilities. Sidney is really a guy who has some integrity. He is so wrapped up in the newspaper and wants to be able to tell the truth. This whole storyline is so much about the truth, and she really takes him down. Regina hurts his feelings in such a deep way, but it comes from that other world that we don't yet know about. You'll also find a very big surprise in this episode because all that you see is not really what's real.

Executive producer Adam Horowitz previously said that we'll see who Sidney was before he even became the Mirror. What kind of person was he before then?
Esposito:
He was a person who really believed in love and had aspirations and dreams. Because of what happened between he and Regina, that was taken away from him. Now, he's left with bitterness, anger and a desire to change his circumstance. Before that, he was a man that had hope and believed in people and goodness. So we see someone who is broken in many ways trying to find their way back to good.

Exclusive: Captain America's Sebastian Stan heads to Once Upon a Time

Lana Parrilla teased that the Evil Queen had a prior love interest in a character we have already met. With you saying something happened between the pair, is it possible he was her lover?
Esposito:
Absolutely. I would suggest that there was something a lot deeper between them that didn't go quite the way it was supposed to. Nothing is ever as it seems. We're assuming that it went both ways, but maybe it didn't. Maybe it was just another ruse. It is heartbreaking.

Will we recognize whichever fairy tale character Sidney was before he was the Mirror?
Esposito:
Oh, I think you will. It's such an interesting transition for this character. He's been enslaved in a different way and he becomes free only to be enslaved in this new way.

What will we see of their back story that helped to create the Evil Queen?
Esposito:
It will show how Regina is capable of many things. She's capable of incredible evil. She masks that out of the pain of her own loss, yet she uses that to propel her into a position of power. You'll really begin to see that this Regina, our Evil Queen, is a master manipulator.

Exclusive: Once Upon a Time casts Lost's Emilie de Ravin as Belle

How will Sidney help to break the curse?
Esposito:
I don't know that he will yet. Everyone is just struggling to break the curse because they're stuck in the world of Storybrooke and don't know why. Deep down inside them, they yearn to know and want their freedom. I think all the characters, true to the show, will have the opportunity to experience a brief knowledge or wisp of the past which gives them the desire to get out. I think Sidney will help in many ways because he's so important to the community in writing the paper, so there's ultimately great opportunities for him to be the Paul Revere.

Which character do you think Sidney was before he became the Mirror?

California orders hike in number of super clean cars

California, long a national leader in cutting auto pollution, pushed the envelope further Friday as state regulators approved rules to cut greenhouse gas emissions from cars and put significantly more pollution-free vehicles on the road in coming years.

The package of Air Resources Board regulations would require auto manufacturers to offer more zero- or very low-emission cars such as battery electric, hydrogen fuel cell and plug-in hybrid vehicles in California starting with model year 2018.

By 2025, one in seven new autos sold in California, or roughly 1.4 million, must be ultra-clean, moving what is now a driving novelty into the mainstream.

The board also strengthened future emission standards for all new cars, making them the toughest in the nation. The rules are intended by 2025 to slash smog-forming pollutants from new vehicles by 75 percent and reduce by a third their emissions that contribute to global warming.

"Today's vote ? represents a new chapter for clean cars in California and in the nation as a whole," said Air Resources Board chairwoman Mary Nichols.

Auto manufacturers are uneasy with some of the provisions but generally support the package, which took three years to develop. "We know the board wants to push the automakers," said Mike Love, national regulatory affairs manager for Toyota Motor Sales. "We said we're willing to go along with you and do our best."

The requirements are expected to drive up car prices. The board staff predicts that the advanced technologies needed to meet the new standards will add $1,900 to the price of a new car in 2025. But that would be more than offset by $6,000 in estimated fuel savings over the life of the vehicle, according to the board's staff.

Zero-emission autos now make up a minuscule portion of the more than 26 million cars in California, with just a few hundred fuel cell cars and about 34,000 battery electric autos on the road.

"The fact that we are going to change what consumers can buy is one of the most important things we can do," board member Ken Yeager said before the panel, at the end of a two-day hearing in Los Angeles, voted 9 to 0 to approve the rules.

Manufacturers are poised to introduce a number of new electric and plug-in hybrid models. "This year, two dozen or more new vehicles are going to come out in the market," Love said. "Everyone is trying their idea for EVs (electric vehicles), plug-ins."

Nichols said she has seen "a real change in attitudes on the part of auto companies that have seen the handwriting on the wall.... The reality is that companies see the future is going to be in electric drivetrain vehicles. They're moving there as fast they can."

But automakers do still have concerns, particularly whether consumers will buy the ultra-clean cars.

"Automakers are mandated to build products that consumers are not mandated to buy," said Gloria Bergquist, a spokeswoman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, which includes Chrysler Group, Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. "If the electric vehicle infrastructure is not in place, consumers may be reluctant to buy these technologies."

Jack Nerad, Kelley Blue Book market analyst, predicted that "the added expense and lesser versatility of the 'environmental' vehicles" will continue to make them less desirable to consumers. Manufacturers might have to sell clean cars at a loss to meet the requirements, and "buyers of conventional cars will pick up the remainder of the tab," he said. One of the most disputed elements of the rules centered on a clause that in the early years of the mandate gives credits to automakers who reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of their fleets more than required. Those credits would cut the number of electric, fuel cell and plug-in hybrids the companies had to offer in California.

Jay Friedland, legislative director of Plug In America, called it "a loophole you can drive a truck through" that will undermine the 2025 goal of having ultra-clean cars make up 15% of the new vehicles sold in the state.

A zero-emission mandate is not new in California. It dates from 1990 but was progressively watered down over the years.

The state's ambitious goals to slash its greenhouse gas production renewed focus on the role that super clean cars could play.

"The steady drumbeat of the need to get off the dependence on petroleum is really what is driving this," Nichols said. "It's taken longer than we've hoped."

Starting with model year 2015, automakers will have to meet tougher standards for smog-forming emissions and, in 2017, greater limits on pollutants that contribute to global warming.

By 2025, the standards are designed to reduce the average smog-forming emissions of new cars and light trucks by 75% compared with those sold today.

The greenhouse gas limits, which would be the same as the federal government has proposed for vehicles nationally, should cut those auto emissions by a third more in 2025 than required under current standards. To meet the new limits, the board staff anticipates the auto industry will make greater use of advanced hybrid technology, stronger and lighter materials and improved emission control equipment.

If oil companies don't reach an agreement with the state to voluntarily install alternative fueling stations, such as for hydrogen fuel cells, the new rules will also require them to do so when a certain number of cars using that fuel is reached. The outlets could be placed at an existing gasoline station or a free-standing site.

"I hope the oil industry will get on board rather than dragging its feet," said board member Hector De La Torre.

Ivory Coast chief signs defense pact with France (AP)

PARIS ? The presidents of France and Ivory Coast met Thursday after the African leader arrived here for a three-day visit that included the signing of a defense pact in the wake of post-election violence in his country.

Alassane Ouattara has faced calls from France to punish militias supportive of him who engaged in violence during a standoff that followed the 2010 vote ? an episode that left more than 3,000 people dead and kept him out of the presidency for seven months

More than 2,000 French soldiers were in Ivory Coast at the height of the crisis, backing U.N. forces. Under a new accord, up to 300 are expected to remain at a base outside Abidjan, the west African country's economic capital. The new accord replaces a 1961 agreement.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with President Nicolas Sarkozy, Ouattara thanked France for its military support during the "particularly horrible" conflict, and appealed for French investors "to come back to Ivory Coast."

Sarkozy was on hand when Ouattara took the oath of office in May. Now, Ouattara's predecessor ? Laurent Gbagbo ? awaits trial before the International Criminal Court in The Hague for the alleged crimes against humanity committed by his army in the standoff.

France, former colonial ruler in Ivory Coast, is maintaining aid to the country after so far injecting euro400 million ($525.8 million). About euro1 billion in debt is expected to be canceled.

Under a program for so-called Very Indebted Countries, a debt relief and development contract worth euro2 billion is expected to be concluded this year. It is aimed at fighting poverty, promoting educational and professional training and strengthening the rule of law.

Despite his international backing, Ouattara's failure so far to punish militias backing him who killed Gbagbo's supporters has cast a shadow over his rule.

France is encouraging the new president to take action so that peace and security are anchored in the country, an official close to Sarkozy said. The person requested anonymity because of a lack of authorization to speak publicly.

"Those who killed, whatever side they were on, will be judged," Ouattara said in an interview with the daily Le Monde's Thursday edition, a response he has offered in the past.

Good Reads: America's decline, China's rise, the way forward

There's a new genre of American journalism called 'Decline Watch,' tracking America's slow steady decline and China's rise. Here's your daily cup of sunshine.

Most adult Americans today grew up with their feet on the terra firma of American superiority.

Faced with a cold war rival, the Soviet Union, Americans confidently paid taxes and sent their sons off to war in Korea, Vietnam, and oddly, Grenada, in order to keep communism at bay. From Washington, President Reagan proclaimed that it was ?morning in America,? which was great if you were a morning person, and Americans took the metaphor to heart. Intuitively, they knew that a free-market democracy would win against a soul-crushing authoritarian form of communism.

But now in the early part of the 21st century, that terra firma has begun to shift underfoot. Intellectuals from developing countries have argued that democracy is not always suited for all cultures, particularly those with poor education systems. Terrorist groups have attacked America?s symbols of prosperity and strength???the Pentagon, the World Trade Center ? and even America?s friends have begun to doubt that America has the mettle to carry on. The global economic crisis rounded out a very tough decade, and on the stage that America once dominated, a few new players emerged. They were familiar faces: America?s old rivals, Russia and China, who have devised hybrid models of capitalism very different from America?s that seem to function better, at least for now.

Now, it?s estimated that within the next 6 years, China may overtake America as the largest economic power in the world.

The changing global mood has created an entirely new genre of American journalism. Call it ?Decline Watch.? The writers tend to be economists ? the same profession that made us believe in the superiority of American capitalism, and in the logic of tearing down borders to create a unified European economy ? and their arguments are persuasive, if a little self-defeating.

Consider Charles Duhigg and Keith Bradsher?s piece in the New York Times this week, called ?How the US Lost Out on iPhone Work.? The reasons why Apple and every other American corporation with access to a travel agent have relocated their manufacturing to China go far beyond mere cheap wages, the authors write.

And they?re right. As the Atlantic magazine?s Jordan Weissmann notes in a blog, China has an education system that produces 600,000 engineers a year, compared with the US?s 70,000. China has an industrial policy that subsidizes the building of factories at home and the sale of products abroad.

Here?s a point in the New York Times piece that took my breath away.

Judges weigh HIV-infected man's fight to get job (AP)

ATLANTA ? A panel of federal judges appeared skeptical Wednesday of the Atlanta police department's decision to reject a job application from an HIV-infected man.

The 40-year-old man sued the city in 2010, claiming he was denied a police officer job solely because he has the virus. Atlanta attorneys argued there are other officers on the force with HIV, and said the police department does not have a blanket policy disqualifying candidates with the virus. Gay rights groups and police agencies are closely following the case.

One of the three judges signaled the lawsuit would likely be sent back to a lower judge to reconsider.

"I don't see how we can avoid a remand in this case," Circuit Judge R. Lanier Anderson said.

The judges will issue a ruling later.

The man sued under the pseudonym Richard Roe and has requested anonymity because he believes his medical condition could prevent him from other job opportunities. He said in an interview he was a former criminal investigator with the city of Los Angeles who discovered he had HIV in 1997, but that it didn't hinder his ability to perform his duties.

Roe moved to Atlanta to find a better job and joined the city's taxicab enforcement unit. In January 2006, he decided he wanted to join the police force. He passed a series of tests, but hit a snag when a blood test revealed he had the virus that causes AIDS.

The doctor didn't do any more tests, according to records, and recommended to the city that he have "no physical contact or involvement with individuals."

Atlanta attorneys said the city follows the recommendation of the physicians who examine candidates, and in this case, the doctor advised the department to limit Roe's interaction with the public.

"We're told that he can't do the job," said Robert Godfrey, a city attorney. "We have to assume when a doctor tells us this, he can't perform the essential duties."

Roe's attorney, Scott Schoettes of gay rights group Lambda Legal, said there was no evidence that Roe posed a threat to the health and safety of others. The city violated the federal Americans with Disabilities Act by not fully vetting his client, Schoettes said.

Roe's advocates said the city's position perpetuates myths about HIV that have persisted for three decades. Modern medical advances have made the disease a manageable condition that in many cases won't affect job performance even in the most demanding fields, they said.

"I really see an opportunity for the city of Atlanta to make some drastic changes and move forward," Roe said. "I think that's what this whole case is about."

(AP) ? Imagine having the feeling that tiny bugs are crawling on your body, that you have oozing sores and mysterious fibers sprouting from your skin. Sound like a horror movie? Well, at one point several years ago, government doctors were getting up to 20 calls a day from people saying they had such symptoms.

Many of these people were in California and one of that state's U.S. senators, Dianne Feinstein, asked for a scientific study. In 2008, federal health officials began to study people saying they were affected by this freakish condition called Morgellons.

The study cost nearly $600,000. Its long-awaited results, released Wednesday, conclude that Morgellons exists only in the patients' minds.

"We found no infectious cause," said Mark Eberhard, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official who was part of the 15-member study team.

The study appears in PLoS One, one of the Public Library of Science journals.

Sufferers of Morgellons (mor-GELL-uns) describe a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, erupting sores, crawling sensations on their skin and ? perhaps worst of all ? mysterious red, blue or black fibers that sprout from their skin. Some say they've suffered for decades, but the syndrome wasn't named until 2002, when "Morgellons" was chosen from a 1674 medical paper describing similar symptoms.

Afflicted patients have documented their suffering on websites and many have vainly searched for a doctor who believed them. Some doctors believe the condition is a form of delusional parasitosis, a psychosis in which people believe they are infected with parasites.

Last May, Mayo Clinic researchers published a study of 108 Morgellons patients and found none of them suffered from any unusual physical ailment. The study concluded that the sores on many of them were caused by their own scratching and picking at their skin.

The CDC study was meant to be broader, starting with a large population and then went looking for cases within the group. The intent was to give scientists a better idea of how common Morgellons actually is.

They focused on more than 3 million people who lived in 13 counties in Northern California, a location chosen in part because all had health insurance through Kaiser Permanente of Northern California, which had a research arm that could assist in the project. Also, many of the anecdotal reports of Morgellons came from the area.

Culling through Kaiser patient records from July 2006 through June 2008, the team found ? and was able to reach ? 115 who had what sounded like Morgellons. Most were middle-aged white women. They were not clustered in any one spot.

That led to the finding that Morgellons occurred in roughly 4 out of every 100,000 Kaiser enrollees. "So it's rare," Eberhard said.

Roughly 100 agreed to at least answer survey questions, and about 40 consented to a battery of physical and psychological tests that stretched over several days.

Blood and urine tests and skin biopsies checked for dozens of infectious diseases, including fungus and bacteria that could cause some of the symptoms. The researchers found none that would explain the cases.

There was no sign of an environmental cause, either, although researchers did not go to each person's house to look around.

They took fibers from 12 people, which were tested at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Nothing unusual there, either. Cotton and nylon, mainly ? not some kind of organism wriggling out of a patient's body.

Skin lesions were common, but researchers concluded most of them were from scratching.

What stood out was how the patients did on the psychological exams. Though normal in most respects, they had more depression than the general public and were more obsessive about physical ailments, the study found.

However, they did not have an unusual history of psychiatric problems, according to their medical records. And the testing gave no clear indication of a delusional disorder.

So what do they have? The researchers don't know. They don't even know what to call it, opting for the label "unexplained dermopathy" in their paper.

But clearly, something made them miserable. "The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence," said Felicia Goldstein, an Emory University neurology professor and study co-author.

She said perhaps the patients could be helped by cognitive behavioral therapy that might help them deal with possible contributing psychological issues.

The study is not expected to be the last word on the subject.

Among those with additional questions is Randy Wymore, an Oklahoma State University pharmacologist who for years was the most reputable scientist to look into it and who has concluded Morgellons is not a psychiatric disorder.

On Wednesday, Wymore said he had not seen the CDC paper and was unable to comment on it. But when the study began, he questioned whether Kaiser patients with Morgellons would participate, especially if they were unhappy with how they were previously handled by their Kaiser doctors.

"There is always the question: How many of the study participants actually have Morgellons Disease?" he said, in an email.

The CDC is not planning additional study, however. The agency's expertise is in infectious diseases and environmental health problems, and the researchers saw no evidence of that.

"We're not mental health experts," one CDC spokeswoman said.

Severe Brain Injury When Young May Have Long-Term Effects (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Jan. 23 (HealthDay News) -- Although many people believe young children are extremely resilient after they are seriously hurt, the opposite may be true with traumatic brain injuries.

Two Australian studies looked at the impact of traumatic brain injury in children as young as 2 years, and found that these injuries affected cognitive function, IQ and even behavior for some time. However, the researchers also found that recovery from traumatic brain injury can continue for years after the initial injury. And, a child's home environment can positively influence recovery if the child lives in a stable, caring home.

"Many people think that the soft skull of a baby may give them some advantage because if they fall they are not likely to sustain a skull fracture. Also, because a baby's brain is growing so quickly, it seems like the brain may be able to fix an injury. In reality, the soft skull and growing brain of a baby put them at a greater risk of future problems," said the lead author of one of the studies, Louise Crowe, a postdoctoral research officer at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in Melbourne.

"Children with significant head injuries do recover, but they are generally slower to learn concepts, and some high-level skills are often too difficult for them," she added.

Results from both studies were released online Jan. 23 and are scheduled to appear in the February issue of Pediatrics.

By age 16, at least one in 30 children will experience a traumatic brain injury, according to background information in one of the studies. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) occur after a blow or bump to the head, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Young children -- those under 4 years old -- are particularly at risk of experiencing a traumatic brain injury, according to the CDC. Such injuries can occur from a fall, a car accident, deliberate child abuse, sports or being hit with a moving object. Fortunately, most of these injuries aren't fatal, but about one-third of children who survive a TBI will have lasting damage, report the researchers.

Very few studies, however, have followed youngsters from the time of their injury through adolescence, to assess the full effect of the brain injury.

The first study looked at 40 children between the ages of 2 and 7 who had experienced a traumatic brain injury. They were compared to 16 healthy children. The children were examined 12 months, 30 months and 10 years after the injury, according to the study.

Not surprisingly, they found that children with the most severe injuries had the worst cognitive outcomes.

But, the news wasn't all bad. Initially, while the brain was recovering from the injury, the children didn't make significant developmental gains for about three years. However, after that period, and at least up until 10 years after the injury, the children began to make some age-appropriate developmental gains.

That means that even many years after an injury, interventions and therapies for these children may be effective, said the study's lead author, Vicki Anderson, a professor in critical care and neuroscience research at the Murdoch Institute.

"Although this does not suggest that children catch up to peers, it does imply that the gap does not widen during this period," she said.

This study also found that the home environment and relationships could make a difference in a child's recovery. More stable homes with less family conflict appeared to contribute to a child's recovery.

"It's difficult to predict outcome," said Anderson. "A quality home environment and access to appropriate rehabilitation is critical to maximize outcomes. Or, the young brain is plastic, and so the better the environment, the better the outcome."

The second study, led by Crowe, followed a group of 53 children who had sustained a traumatic brain injury before they were 3 years old, and 27 non-injured children. They followed up with these children when they were between 4 and 6 years old. The average time since the injury occurred was 40 months.

Children who had moderate-to-severe TBIs scored lower on IQ tests by about seven to 10 points, according to the study. Mild traumatic brain injuries didn't seem to significantly affect IQ. However, mild and moderate-to-severe TBIs were associated with an increased risk of behavior problems.

And, as with Anderson's study, this study also found that a child's environment has an effect on cognitive function and behavior after a brain injury.

"Children from cohesive family environments and children whose parents had lower levels of stress showed better recovery," Crowe said. "Why this is so is unclear, but it may be due to a parent spending more time with their children, and children also growing up in a less stressful environment."

One expert noted that the findings make an important point.

"We still don't understand all of the factors that affect outcomes. But, these studies do give us important data. We don't necessarily want to close the door on treating these children too soon. There may still be room for improvement over time, but there are persistent deficits," said Dr. Mandeep Tamber, an assistant professor of pediatric neurosurgery at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Meanwhile, Crowe advised parents to be vigilant with young children. She said traumatic brain injuries can result from seemingly minor accidents, such as a baby rolling off of a bed or couch.

TurboTax Premier Online (2011)

As much as personal tax preparation software and Web sites have evolved over the last 20-plus years, they still can't anticipate every possible user question or accommodate every imaginable tax scenario.

But Intuit's TurboTax family of sites comes closer than anyone.

The big takeaway this year is not what's in TurboTax. It's where it's available: everywhere. Intuit's new mobile offerings make it possible for you to sweat every detail of your 1040 while you're in your home office, riding the train to work, sitting in a restaurant?anywhere. The entire TurboTax line has been optimized for the Apple iPad, and additional apps are available for the iPhone and Android operating systems.

The other significant piece of news for the 2011 tax year is the availability of tax professionals (CPAs, Enrolled Agents, and tax lawyers) for questions from taxpayers. Unlike in the past, these phone calls and online chats are free, and you can request as many as you'd like.

Little has been done to the core site itself, with one big exception: It's faster. All of those pretty fonts and icons and graphics have had impact on performance in previous years, but I was pleased to see that speed was improved this go-round.

Versions Galore
I reviewed TurboTax Premier Online 2011. As always, you don't have to pay until you print or e-file, and pricing remains the same as the 2010 versions: $49.95 for the federal version, and still a whopping $36.95 for state. Though the state version imports the data you so carefully prepare in the federal edition, there's not nearly as much to it. Granted, every state has different tax laws and they change every year, but this still seems excessive. No other online tax product is as expensive as TurboTax, all things considered.

Each TurboTax site looks and works much like the ones a step lower on the Intuit food chain. But as you go up the chain, each level adds on its own extras and is increasingly sophisticated. Conveniently, you can start your prep on one and transfer your work to another if you find the first one lacking. Competitors also offer multi-tier product lines with in-place upgrading.

A free e-file is included with each of these products:

  • TurboTax Federal Free Edition Online. Actually contains many major forms and schedules, including the 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ; Schedules A and B; several 1099s; and a whole host of others, but it lacks the powerhouse Schedules C-F and step-by-step guidance. State version, $27.95.
  • TurboTax Basic Online. Adds step-by-step help. Federal, $19.95; state $36.95.
  • TurboTax Deluxe Online. Handles more complex deductions, like home mortgages, medical expenses, charitable donations and childcare expenses. Also hunts down those you may have missed. Federal, $29.95; state, $36.95.
  • TurboTax Premier Online. Comes with special guidance and resources for taxpayers who have investments and/or rental property. Federal, $49.95; state, $36.95.
  • TurboTax Home & Business Online. Basic, Deluxe and Premiere include the Schedule C/EZ (a simplified version of the Schedule C), but this top-of-the-line personal tax prep site is the best choice for sole proprietors, consultants, 1099 contractors or single-member LLCs who want extra guidance on entering business income and expenses. Also lets you prepare unlimited W-2 and 1099-MISC forms. Federal, $74.95; state, $36.95.

CD-based desktop versions are still available, but they're significantly more expensive. H&R Block and TaxACT, too, have desktop versions, but CompleteTax is online-only. For example Premier costs $89.95 direct for the CD or download version.

Guiding You Through
Intuit likes to call TurboTax a GPS for your taxes. It's an apt description. Thanks to a clear navigational system and a plethora of help resources, you always know where you are, how to get where you're going, and you can ask questions if you're lost or don't understand the freeway signs.

The opening screens ask for your personal information (address, Social Security number, etc.), providing blank fields, check boxes and drop-down lists here and throughout the site (if you're missing information as you proceed through the site, you can flag it with the tool provided and come back to it later). The program divides the 1040 into its assorted forms and schedules, taking your answers and doing any calculations necessary, and then dropping them into the correct fields in the background.

Moving on, you'll visit each of four more sections: Federal Taxes, State Taxes, Wrap-Up and Print & File. You'll do the lion's share of your work in the first, as it's divided into:

  • Wages & Income (salaries, interest and dividends, investments, retirement funds, etc.)
  • Deductions & Credits (mortgage interest and property taxes, home energy credits, child and dependent care, charitable donations, medical expenses, estimated taxes, etc.)
  • Other Tax Situations (Alternative Minimum Tax, Underpayment Penalties, Nanny and Household Employee Tax, etc.)
  • Federal Review (list of topics you may have missed; TurboTax will take you to the appropriate screen and bring you back to the review if you've forgotten something)
  • Error Check (TurboTax examines your return for errors and opens a small window displaying the related area of the form, so you can fix it)

The Wrap-Up section does a final review, estimates your risk of an audit (no guarantees, of course, but you can pay $39.95 for representation in case the worst happens) and provides some suggestions for next year's tax planning. Every site offers its own version of these tasks, and while I've never found this follow-up to be particularly enlightening, TurboTax does it as well as anyone.

Costa CEO says captain misled company, crew (AP)

ROME ? The cruise captain who grounded the Costa Concordia off the Tuscan coast with 4,200 people on board did not relay correct information either to the company or crew after the ship hit rocks, the cruise ship owner's CEO said Friday as the search resumed for 21 missing passengers.

CEO Pierluigi Foschi told Italian state TV that the company spoke to the captain at 10:05 p.m. (2105 GMT; 4:05 p.m. EST), some 20 minutes after the ship ran aground on Jan. 13, but could not offer proper assistance because the captain's description "did not correspond to the truth."

Capt. Francesco Schettino said only that he had "problems" on board but did not mention hitting a reef.

Likewise, Foschi said crew members were not informed of the gravity of the situation.

Passenger video shown on Italian TV indicates crew members telling passengers to go to their cabins as late as 10:25 p.m. (2125 GMT; 4:25 p.m. EST). The abandon ship alarm sounded just before 11:00 p.m. (2200 GMT; 5:00 p.m. EST).

"That's because they also did not receive correct information on the gravity of the situation," Foschi said.

The $450 million Costa Concordia was carrying more than 4,200 passengers and crew when it slammed into well-charted rocks off the island of Giglio a week ago. Eleven people have been confirmed dead.

The Concordia shifted again on its rocky perch Friday, forcing the suspension of diving search operations for the 21 people still missing and raising concerns about the stability of the ship's resting place. But the search in areas above the waterline resumed in the evening after the ship was deemed stable.

The remarks by Costa CEO Foschi are the latest to indicate a lack of proper communication with authorities on land as the emergency unfolded.

An audiotape of the Concordia's first contact with maritime authorities has a Concordia office repeatedly replying that the ship had experienced a blackout, even though it had hit the reef more than half an hour earlier.

Italian media reported the officer on the call was Schettino, but that could not be independently confirmed.

Costa Crociere SpA, which offered support to the captain in the hours after the emergency, has now turned its back on the man who is under investigation for manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning his ship. Schettino, who was jailed after he left the ship, is under house arrest near Naples.

Costa in recent days has suspended Schettino, announced it is no longer paying his legal fees and has signed on as a civil party in the prosecution, a move that positions it as an injured party and would allow it to seek damages in the case of a guilty verdict.

Coast Guard spokesman Cmdr. Cosimo Nicastro said crews will evaluate the ship's stability Saturday morning to see if the diving operation can resume, focusing on an area where passengers would have sought lifeboats, Nicastro said.

It was not clear if the slight movements registered by sensors placed on board the Costa Concordia were just vibrations as the ship settles on the rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio or if the massive ocean liner is slowly slipping off the reef. Salvage experts suggest it could be because of pockets of air gradually escaping.

The sensors detected that the ship's bow was moving about 15 millimeters (half an inch) an hour and the stern about 7 millimeters (one-quarter inch) an hour, said Nicola Casagli of the University of Florence, who was called in by Italian authorities to monitor the ship's stability.

The Concordia's movements are being watched since any significant shift could be dangerous for divers trying to locate those missing since the Concordia ran aground Jan. 13. An additional fear is that movement could damage tanks holding a 500,000 gallons of fuel oil and lead to leaks.

The sea floor drops off sharply a few meters (yards) from where the ship is resting, and Italy's environment minister has warned it risks sinking.

On Friday, relatives of some of the 21 missing were at Giglio's port getting briefings from rescue teams.

Casagli told Sky TG24 that some movement in the Concordia was only natural given the immense weight of the steel-hulled ship, which is being held in place by two huge rocks at bow and stern.

But the latest movements indicate it isn't stable, he said. "These are small, regular movements that are being monitored because they're going in the same direction," he told Sky.

Late Thursday, Carnival Corp., the U.S.-based company that owns Costa, announced it was conducting a comprehensive audit of all 10 of its cruise lines to review safety and emergency response procedures in the wake of the Costa disaster. The evacuation was chaotic and the alarm to abandon the ship was sounded after the Concordia had capsized too much to get many life boats down.

Exclusive: 'Hoarding' threatens to end a marriage

TLC

Hoarder Vickie leased a storefront to hold her belongings.

By Anna Chan

At first glance, Vickie and Jeff's home appears pretty normal. The living room, dining room and kitchen are all pretty tidy. So what is this pair doing on "Hoarding: Buried Alive"?

Venture into other parts of their home, and Vickie's 20 years of compulsive hoarding become apparent. Three of the five bedrooms in the couple's house are filled with her things. Then there is also the storage unit -- also filled to the brim -- the couple rents to hold the items that don't fit in the home.

"I've considered walking away from this marriage several times ... just because of this," said husband Jeff in an exclusive clip TLC shared with us. "I just physically and mentally have had enough, and I told her if something wasn't done this year, I would probably walk."

But things were even worse than he realized. What he didn't know is that his wife later rented out a second storage unit, and when that filled up, leased a 9,000 square foot storefront commercial space.

As if her hoarding and secret (giant) stashes weren't enough, Vickie also has their three grown children lying to him.

"My kids know about my storages," Vickie admitted to TLC's cameras. "I've asked them not to tell their dad."

See how bad the problems are in this exclusive clip TLC shared with us:

With the help of a clinical psychologist, Vickie faces her hoarding problem and comes clean with Jeff on Sunday's episode of "Buried Alive." The episode airs at 9 p.m. on TLC.

If you were Jeff, would you be able to forgive Vickie for the lies and be able to work together to save the marriage? Or did she go too far with the secrets? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

UCI legal? That depends?

  • By Aaron Hersh and Nick Legan

The Cervelo P5 with the triathlon fork. Photo: Aaron Hersh

Anytime a big player in the aero bicycle market launches a new bike, it?s a big deal. In the case of Cerv?lo?s P5, it was a slightly bigger deal than any other launch in recent history. Why? Well, not only was the cycling press waiting to see the latest wind-cheating design from the Canadian manufacturer, but there were rumors of hydraulic brakes, something not entirely new, but certainly interesting.

It turns out that Cerv?lo appears to have delivered once again on a bike that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also functionally compelling. Cerv?lo partnered with both Magura and 3T for the P5. And the result is a fine example of the increasingly popular trend of frame and component design integration.

Playing with the rules, and winning

The frame is UCI legal and one iteration of the new fork is as well. Cerv?lo also offers a triathlon-specific fork that is not. The frame conforms to the regulations stating that tubes must be no more than three times deeper than their width, but Cerv?lo used a loophole to stretch the seat tube beyond the typical interpretation of the rule.

Cerv?lo senior advanced R & D engineer Damon Rinard says the UCI allows ?gussets? that support and connect the frame tubes as long as they are no deeper than the original tube dimension. The P5?s seat tube is 27mm wide, which means it must be 81mm or shorter in the longest direction, and the seat tube is almost exactly that length. The gusset connecting the seat tube and the top tube, however, is another 81mm.

These connected elements create a surface that is 162mm at its longest point. A second gusset is used to connect the seat stays to the seat tube that extends the segment of the tube deeper than the UCI?s 3:1 ratio lower on the seat tube. At its widest point, the P5 actually has a 6:1 ratio, yet it still abides by the UCI?s 3:1 rule. Go figure.

GOP Debate Highlights: Newt Gingrich Denies Open Marriage Request, Slams CNN and Mitt Romney

Another Republican debate has come and gone, and as usual there was no shortage of fireworks as Newt Gingrich clashed with his rivals ... and CNN's John King.

Amid reports that Newt asked Marianne Gingrich for an open marriage while cheating on her with Callista Bisek in 1999, King led off the GOP debate with that topic.

Newt was not happy, and he let King know it ...

Reaming out the “destructive, vicious, negative” media rather than his ex-wife, who raised these accusations yesterday, Gingrich said he was appalled by CNN.

Newt, who went on to divorce Marianne and marry Callista in 2000 (they are still married), punctuated his lengthy answer by saying, “The story is false.”

Some other highlights of the second South Carolina debate this week, and the last before Saturday's critical primary in the Palmetto State included:

  • Rick Santorum saying Barack Obama stands for “economic squalor”
  • Mitt Romney saying "maybe" he'll release his tax returns sometime
  • Santorum repeatedly criticizing Newt's grandiosity and stability
  • Gingrich and Santorum claiming Romney is not really pro-life
  • Ron Paul fans yelling for their man to get more screen time

With time running out for all candidates not named Mitt Romney to post a win and halt his march toward the Republican nomination, the tension was high.

Can any of them do it? We'll find out by tomorrow night.

Under heavy debate pressure from his rivals, Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney defended his record as a venture capitalist, insisted he bears no responsibility for attack ads aired by his allies and grudgingly said in campaign debate Monday night he might release his income tax returns this spring.

"I have nothing in them that suggests there's any problem and I'm happy to do so," he said. "I sort of feel like we're showing a lot of exposure at this point," he added.

Romney came under criticism from Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum across two hours in the first of a pair of debates in the run-up to this weekend's first-in-the-South primary in South Carolina. The former Massachusetts governor won the first two events of the campaign, the Iowa caucuses and last week's New Hampshire primary, leads in the pre-primary polls in South Carolina and won an endorsement from campaign dropout Jon Huntsman earlier in the day.

Gingrich has virtually conceded that a victory for Romney in South Carolina would assure his nomination as Democratic President Barack Obama's Republican rival in the fall, and none of the other remaining contenders has challenged that conclusion.

That only elevated the stakes for Monday night's debate, feisty from the outset as former House Speaker Gingrich, Texas Gov. Perry and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum sought to knock Romney off stride while generally being careful to wrap their criticism in anti-Obama rhetoric.

"We need to satisfy the country that whoever we nominate has a record that can stand up to Barack Obama in a very effective way," said Gingrich.

The five men on stage also sought to outdo one another in calling for lower taxes.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul won that competition handily, saying he thought the top personal tax rate should be zero.

In South Carolina, a state with a heavy military presence, the tone turned muscular at times.

Gingrich drew strong applause when he said: "Andrew Jackson had a pretty clear idea about America's enemies. Kill them."

Perry also won favor from the crowd when he said the Obama administration had overreacted in its criticism of the Marines who were videotaped urinating on the corpses of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.

The former House speaker and Perry led the assault against Romney's record at Bain Capital, a private equity firm that bought companies and sought to remake them into more competitive enterprises, with uneven results.

"There was a pattern in some companies ... of leaving them with enormous debt and then within a year or two or three having them go broke," Gingrich said. "I think that's something he ought to answer."

Perry referred to a steel mill in Georgetown, S.C. where, he said, "Bain swept in, they picked that company over and a lot of people lost jobs there."

Romney said that the steel industry was battered by unfair competition from China. As for other firms, he said, "Four of the companies that we invested in ... ended up today having some 120,000 jobs.

"Some of the businesses we invested in were not successful and lost jobs," he acknowledged.

It was Perry who challenged Romney, a multimillionaire, to release his income tax returns. The Texas governor said he has already done so, adding he believes Gingrich will do likewise later in the week.

"Mitt, we need for you to release your income tax so the people of this country can see how you made your money. ... We cannot fire our nominee in September. We need to know now."

Later, a debate moderator pressed Romney on releasing his tax returns.

His answer was anything but crisp.

"But you know if that's been the tradition I'm not opposed to doing that. Time will tell. But I anticipate that most likely I'm going to get asked to do that in the April time period and I'll keep that open," he said.

Prodded again, he said, "I think I've heard enough from folks saying look, you know, let's see your tax records. I have nothing in them that suggests there's any problem and I'm happy to do so. I sort of feel like we're showing a lot of exposure at this point, and if I become our nominee and what's happened in history is people have released them in about April of the coming year and that's probably what I'd do."

Afterward, Gingrich said that wasn't good enough. "If there's nothing there, why is he waiting till April?" the former House speaker told reporters.

Santorum stayed away from the clash over taxes, instead starting a dispute of his own. He said a campaign group supporting Romney has been attacking him for supporting voter rights for convicted felons, and asked Romney what his position was on the issue.

Romney initially ducked a direct answer, preferring to ask Santorum if the ad was accurate.

He then said he doesn't believe convicted violent felons should have the right to vote, even after serving their terms. Santorum instantly said that as governor of Massachusetts, Romney hadn't made any attempt to change a law that permitted convicted felons to vote while still on parole, a law that the former Pennsylvania senator said was more liberal than the one he has been assailed for supporting.

Romney replied that as Republican governor, he was confronted with a legislature that was heavily Democratic and held a different position.

He also reminded Santorum that candidates have no control over the campaign groups that have played a pivotal role in the race to date.

"It is inaccurate," Santorum said of the ad assailing him, seeking the last word. "I would go out and say, 'Stop it. That you're representing me and you're representing my campaign. Stop it.'"

That issue returned more than an hour later, when Gingrich said he, too, faces false attacks from the same group that is criticizing Santorum. He noted that Romney says he lacks sway over the group, "which makes you wonder how much influence he would have if he were president."

Romney said he hoped no group would run inaccurate ads, and he said the organization backing Gingrich was airing a commercial that is so false that "it's probably the biggest hoax since bigfoot."

He called for scuttling the current system of campaign finance laws to permit individuals to donate as much money as they want to the candidates of their choice.

Noting that the debate was occurring on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, one moderator asked Gingrich if his previous statements about poor children lacking a work ethic were "insulting to all Americans, but particularly to black Americans?

"No," he said emphatically, adding his aim was to break dependence on government programs.

"I'm going to continue to find ways to help poor people learn how to get a job, learn to get a better job and learn someday to own the job," he said.

Romney is the leader in the public opinion polls in South Carolina, although his rivals hope the state's 9.9 percent unemployment rate and the presence of large numbers of socially conservative evangelical voters will allow one of them to slip by him.

Huntsman was the second campaign dropout to endorse Romney, after former Minnesota Gov. Tom Pawlenty. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who quit after a last-place finish in Iowa, has not yet said which of the remaining contenders she supports. Herman Cain, who left the race in December after facing allegations of sexual impropriety, has promised an endorsement soon.

Huntsman's parting announcement included a reference to the differences he and Romney had. But he left the podium without responding to questions about his remark last week, in the run-up to the New Hampshire primary, that Romney was unelectable and out of touch.

It was unclear why Romney did not attend the announcement. He was in town for a later campaign appearance and then the debate.
